Notes : Abraham Marlett, son of Peter Marlett and Mercey Dunn, was the 1st of 13 known children, born 25 May 1785 (birthdate is calculated using the number of years (76), months (8), and days (18) inscribed on his headstone). However, it should also be noted that other records including the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census, as well as military records indicate his birth year occurred between 1787-1789.

Abraham and Esther Marlett married about 1838 in Cattaragus County, NY, and migrated west about 1839 with 2 young sons Norman b. 1827 and Abraham J. b. 1830 from Abraham's first marriage to Samantha (maiden name unknown), along with an infant son Jared b. 1839, who was the first born child from the union of Abraham and Esther Marlett. Abraham's three older children including daughter Rizpah, and sons George and Benjamin initially remained in the Cattergaus, New York region. Abraham and Esther are first enumerated in the 1840 Census of Van Buren Township, Brown, Indiana. Cattaragus County, NY land ownership records provide the following evidence: Abraham Marlett bought land in the northeast part of lot 48 in Napoli, Catt., NY in 1827 from the Holland Land Co. for $100 (Book 2 pg. 10). He sold the land to his brother Reuben of Penfield, NY, in 1832 for $60 (Book 3 pg. 226). In 1838 he bought the land back for $106 (Book 7 pg. 582). He resold the land a week later for $500 to a William Champlin (Book 7 pg. 583). In the deed in 1832 his wife Samantha is mentioned, and she signed the deed "Samanthy." In 1838 his wife is named Esther and she signs with an "X." The assumption is that Abraham Marlett's first-wife Samantha had died sometime after 1832 and he was remarried to Esther by 1838.

Abraham Marlett was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving as a Sergeant in Swift's 2nd Regiment, New York State Militia. Abraham's younger brother Reuben Marlett also served in the New York State Militia during the War of 1812, as a private in Lee's Battalion.

PETER MARLETT

Peter Marlett made a land purchase agreement with Daniel Penfield dated February 23, 1804. It followed the pattern that Penfield had with his settlers, that payment could be made in wheat delivered at his mill on the Irondequoit. Since a son, Elisha Marlett says in the mid-century census that he was born in Orange County, New York in 1765, while a daughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Oliver Reynolds), claims New Jersey as her 1791 birthplace, this may be the pattern traced by the migration of this family. This was another family of considerable size that came to Penfield. The 1810 census shows 10 children then in the household. That year, he signed the petition to form the Morning Star Masonic Lodge.
A couple of years later, Peter Marlett and his neighbor, Issac Beatty, were on a committee to spend $40 building a pound on the southwest corner of Elijah Case's farm. He continued to be a farmer in Penfield until he sold the 96 acres that he owned in Lot 28 and an adjacent 47 acres in Lot 30 to his two sons, Reuben and Elisha, for $3000 in 1824.
Peter Marlett died in Penfield on November 26, 1829. In 1832, his son-in-law, Dr. Oliver Reynolds, was appointed executor. His widow was Mercy and 13 children were named as heirs. One of them, Jacob, was deceased by then.
The others were
Abraham, who lived with his wife Samantha, in Cattaraugus County;
Peter Jr. of Penfield;
Elijah of Oneida County;
Elisha who married Sabrina Pettit and died in Perinton October 25, 1864, at the age of 70.
Sally was the wife of David Baker. she died in 1840.
Elizabeth, wife of the Webster physician, had eight children and died at the age of 81 on November 10 1871.
Mercy had married James Heath of Herkimer County;
Joseph died June 6, 1840;
Reuben died in 1841 at the age of 47. He had three wives: Erritta who died in 1823, Rhoda R.
Polly Celinda, who survived him.
Lucinda was the wife of James Norris;
Louisa died September 5, 1839;
Richard, a merchant in Webster, died in 1877. He was twice married. The first wife and mother of his children died in 1841. Both of his wives were named Eliza.

Notes : Wife of Peter Marlett of Penfield, Monroe, NY.

Mercy died after 1831.

Mercy Dunn has been listed as the daughter of Joel Dunn and Rachel Runyon, on several genealogies, however closer scrutiny has revealed a will, by Samuel Fitzrandolph of Sussex Co., NJ, written shortly before his death in 1788, which lists "Mercy Marlett, daughter of Sarah Dunn" as one of his daughters/heirs. Sarah (Fitzrandolph) Dunn was wife of Reuben Dunn.

Note: NO KNOWN BURIAL PLACE, BUT PETER MARLETT OWNED THE FAMILY PLOT AT OAKWOOD CEMETERY, IN PENFIELD, NY, WHERE MANY OF HIS CHILDREN AND OTHER RELATIVES ARE BURIED. MERCY (DUNN) & PETER MARLETT ARE PRESUMED BURIED THERE, OR VERY NEAR.
